Anchorage cyclist Peter Basinger conquered another rugged course on a single-speed bike on Saturday, topping 16 racers in the Up and Over Powerline Pass race.
Basinger finished in 1:46:06 to beat runner-up Darren Mattingley by just over three minutes.
The 18.5-mile long race started at the South Bivouac parking lot about 3 miles up Campbell Airstrip Road and ended in Indian after a steep descent from Powerline Pass.
They shouldn't be surprised -- he's done things like this before. Last year, Basinger set a course record at the 24 Hours of Kincaid race by completing 22 solo laps on a one-speed bike to win.
"It's a little bit of a grind going up," Basinger allowed Saturday afternoon, "but not that much different from a geared bike.
"I just thought I was going to ride and have fun. But then I found myself passing the leader 6 miles in, going up the Powerline trail and I figured I should go hard."
