This annual event takes off from the middle of the bridge (over the Copper River) in Chitina at 12 o'clock noon on Saturday, July 31st. This bumpy, rough, yet beautiful 60 mile dirt road race leads you to the camp grounds in McCarthy. The finish is just before the small bridge into McCarthy and the epic Kennicott Lodge and Mine. Most racers and families camp here at the camp grounds and that is also where the trials event takes place at 8 p.m. that evening. During and following the trials event we will be drawing and giving away Alaskan door prizes.
Register early! The first 50 people that register at Paramount Cycles, RTR, The Bike Department, and Sunshine Sports will receive a T-shirt. T-shirts will be handed out during race day registration at the Campground In Chitina.
On Sunday, a continuous chainless downhill race takes you from the Kennicott Lodge down to the McCarthy Museum, where you will quickly set your chain free and pedal back up to the lodge by way of the old wagon trail. This fun, fast race concludes at the Lodge, where most racers enjoy lunch before taking on a tour or hike around the glaciers or the old mysterious Kennicott Mine.
In Chitina the camp ground are past the one lane road through the rocks, and across the Copper River. Just past the bridge on the left hand side are "free" campsites. In those camp grounds on Saturday from 10 am 'till 11:30 am will be T-shirt pick up and last minute registrations.
In McCarthy there also camp grounds on the right side of the road at the finish for about $10-15 a night or you can check out these other options for lodging:
