A exciting new option has been added to this year's event: The Poker Run - read below.
GENERAL INFORMATION / APPLICATION / WAIVER / PLEDGE FORMS / 2003 RESULTS / 2002 RESULTS / 2004 ROSTER
Completing Teams: If you are looking for an equestrian, a runner, or a mountain biker to complete your team, please contact Bjarne or Robin (see below), and we'll do everything we can to make sure you have a complete team (more).
The Course: Set on the beautiful Hillside Trail System above Anchorage, participants will follow a combination of trails which will be different from past years. These trails will generally be non technical with rolling hills. Course markings will be set up the evening before the event, and rechecked the morning of the event. We will use orange flagging posted on wires, about a foot above the ground.
Entry Fee: $20 per person. Teams may compete, where each competitor completes one or two disciplines each. Individuals can also enter as a solo competitor.
The Format: When you choose a distance, either approx. 3 or 5 km, all disciplines from your team (or solo participant) will go that distance. Competitors on horses will start the event, going out at 5 minute intervals, riding singly or in groups of up to 5 horses. Equestrians must try to ride at a pace of 200 meters per minute (8 minutes per mile or 7.5 miles per hour). Any amount of time too fast or too slow will become a rider's penalty time, and that time will be added to the overall event time. We will have water available for horses near the start/finish. Helmets for equestrians are strongly recommended, and mandatory for bikers.
The equestrian will tag off to the team's runner, and the runner to the biker, or the solo competitor continues. Runners and bikers will go all out for speed.
Poker Run: All competitors will have the option to join the Poker Run. This event will be held on the Spencer Loop Trails, away from the trails used in the first part of the event, the riathlon. This event will not be timed. Along the course you will reach check points, where volunteers will hand out playing cards. At the completion of the course, the best poker hand wins. As competitors in the triathlon tag off to their team mates, they will have the option to continue onto the Poker Run Course. Participating bikers will simply check in at start/finish before they transition to the Poker Run. The Poker Run will be designed as a pledge by mile fund raiser for the Rainbow Connection Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program. We request that you raise pledges for at least $25 per person. The length of the course will be 4.5 miles, so at a minimum, you could ask one contributor to pledge $5.56 per mile, or 10 contributors to pledge $0.56 per mile. However, we encourage you to raise as much money as possible for a very worthy cause.
History: The first Horse-Run-Bike was organized in the late 1990's when horses were being blamed for ruining trails. It turned out that creatures with a split hoof were to blame, but the occasion sparked the incentive to organize the first triathlon. The event allowed different trail user groups to work together and understand the passion of each group has for their sport. The second running was held in 2002, and has been held annually since with the Rainbow Connection Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program receiving the proceeds. With Anchorage's increasing population density the equestrian community is finding it a challenge to maintain their access to trails. The triathlon is one of the few organized trail events that catches the attention of the media with the message that horses can compatibly share the trails.
Potluck: We will have some meat on the barbie along with some soft drinks. If everyone would bring a side dish (according to the first letter of your last name), we'll have a fun potluck event: A-H Salad / I-Q Deserts / R-Z Condiments: Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Onions for use with Hamburgers (pre-sliced).
Membership is the Arctic Bicycle Club is NOT required for those doing the mountain biking portion.
