Loan dominates ABC Fat Tire races
Close calls among men and total dominance by Sheryl Loan among women highlighted two days of mountain-bike racing in the Arctic Bicycle Club's Fat Tire Festival last weekend.
Three races were held over two days in Chitina and McCarthy.
In the road race from Chitina to McCarthy on Saturday, 60 miles was enough to put four seconds between first-place Fred Bull and second-place Eric Parsons. Bull won in 3 hours, 12 minutes, 17 seconds to edge Parsons (3:12:21). Loan won the women's 60-miler in 3:27:40, more than 13 minutes ahead of the next-fastest woman. Her time ranked seventh among the 21 men who cycled the same course and distance.
In the chainless downhill and hill climb, which took bikers from Kennicott Lodge to the McCarthy Airport on Sunday, Jet Thompson beat Peter Basinger by one second. Thompson covered the 6.7-mile course in 26:03, with Basiner second in 26:04. Loan won the women's race in 27:10, more than a minute ahead of the next fastest woman. She ranked fourth overall.
